Tiering the Packers' pending free agents
With extremely limited resources available this offseason, the Packers face tougher calls on their free agents than in previous years.
As expected, Aaron Rodgers' future has dominated the headlines since the Green Bay Packers surprisingly fell in the divisional round to the San Francisco 49ers. Rodgers, who appeared on the Pat McAfee Show this week and committed to making a decision on his future before free agency, will largely determine how the Packers approach the rest of their offseason.
But the Packers have decisions to make beyond Rodgers. More than 20 players on their 53-man roster need a new contract to remain in Green Bay next season, and many will garner significant interest should they reach the open market.
With extremely limited resources available and additional steps required to get under the salary cap, the Packers face tougher calls on their free agents than in previous years.
Tier 1: Highest priority
Davante Adams - Perhaps the easiest call of any of the Packers' free agents, Davante Adams reportedly will receive the franchise tag before the March 8 deadline. The two-time first-team All-Pro wide receiver has earned an extension that places his pay at the top of the market, something the Packers have promised to do. Perhaps that deal doesn't come with the team given the possibility Rodgers departs this offseason, but even then, Green Bay will want to receive compensation for him in a trade. However, the front office cannot trade Adams unless and until he signs his franchise tender, something Adams and his agent probably won't do.
