Jordan Love performing like franchise QB, and not just in advantageous situations
Jordan Love's play has improved greatly over the last five weeks, but he has performed well this season even in unfavorable circumstances.
After an uneasy and inconsistent first two months of the 2023 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers have steadied the ship thanks in no small part to Jordan Love. The first-year starting quarterback battled a number of issues during the team's October swoon, regularly turning over the ball and showing reticence to take shots when opportunities presented themselves. But over the last five weeks, those errors have largely dissipated, and Love's performance has begun to rival the NFL's best signal-callers.
No single metric captures the full breadth of a quarterback's performance, but expected points added do a decent job of highlighting the degree to which Love has ascended lately. From Week 9 to Week 13, over three signal-callers with at least 100 dropbacks have outperformed Love's 0.270 EPA/play. Tellingly, those three players either find themselves among the favorites for the MVP award (Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy) or have a chance to lead a team to a No. 1 playoff seed (Trevor Lawrence).
And Love hasn't hit those marks by accident. Over the same span of games, he ranks seventh in completion percentage above expectation, placing him ahead of notable QBs such as Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, and even Patrick Mahomes. Love's accuracy and ball placement might not score so highly every week, but the best version of himself can hold his own against the league's premier passers.
All told, Love's play since Week 9 likely still hasn't received the full credit it deserves.
